The Ultimate 10-Step Fundamental Analysis Checklist
Emotions are an investor's worst enemy. To consistently beat the market, you need a systematic approach. Use this interactive 10-step checklist to evaluate any stock before you press the "Buy" button.
Part 1: The Balance Sheet Health
A company cannot survive long-term without a strong financial foundation.
- 1. Current Ratio > 1.5: Does the company have enough short-term assets (cash, inventory) to cover its short-term liabilities (debt due within a year)?
- 2. Debt-to-Equity Ratio < 1.0: Is the company heavily leveraged? High debt in a high-interest-rate environment is a massive red flag.
- 3. Positive Free Cash Flow (FCF): Is the business actually generating cash, or is it burning through investor money to survive?
Part 2: Profitability & Moat
A wide economic moat ensures the company can protect its market share from competitors.
- 4. Return on Equity (ROE) > 15%: Is management efficient at using shareholder money to generate profit?
- 5. Gross Margin Expansion: Are gross margins stable or growing? Shrinking margins indicate fierce competition or rising costs.
- 6. Consistent Earnings Growth: Look at the past 5 years. Is the EPS (Earnings Per Share) growing steadily, or is it wildly erratic?
Part 3: Valuation
Buying a great company at a terrible price is a bad investment.
- 7. P/E Ratio vs. Industry Average: Is the stock significantly more expensive than its direct competitors? If so, does its growth rate justify the premium?
- 8. PEG Ratio < 1.0: The Price/Earnings-to-Growth ratio helps you find growth at a reasonable price. A PEG under 1 generally indicates undervaluation.
- 9. Margin of Safety: Is the stock trading at least 20% below your calculated intrinsic value?
Part 4: The X-Factor
- 10. Insider Buying: Are the CEO and board members buying shares with their own money? Insider buying is one of the strongest bullish signals in the market.
